Description Description
Welcome to our River Refuge on the South Fork!  If you are looking for a convenient, comfortable, kid friendly, quality home that you wouldn’t expect from a short term rental, you are in the right place.

Less than three hours drive from Raleigh-Durham international airport you will find this wonderful three bedroom, 2,000 square-foot house.  Just a half mile walk from the south fork of the New River and Railroad Grade Road, you can walk or bike to your heart’s content without having to get in your car.  At just 20 minutes to either Boone or West Jefferson and situated on 4 acres of land, you’re close to all the action while feeling a million miles away.

Relax under the vaulted ceilings in the magnificent great room while you have coffee, read, or enjoy a fire in the wood burning fireplace.  Down the hall is a second full living area, complete with 65 inch smart TV and extra deep sectional for curling up or stretching out. 500 MBPS Wi-Fi is available throughout the house and a desk with two external monitors plus a docking station for easy connectivity makes for easy remote work during an extended stay.

The kitchen comes with the things you wish more short term rentals have: sharp kitchen knives (our knife block has a built in sharpener), French press, drip coffee maker and an electric kettle, matching, clean pots & pans and cutlery - and even a few surprises like an electric waffle maker!

If you’re traveling with kids (or even if you aren’t!) the house is stocked with puzzles, games and kids books. Outside, guests can take a relaxing dip in the brand new hot tub or catch up on your reading while laying in the hammock. With a king ensuite, a queen bedroom, plus a third with bunkbeds, a daybed and a trundle (four twin mattresses total), the River Refuge on the South Fork is excellent for a family, pairs of families vacationing together, couples and more. We hope you enjoy the high country!

Nearby must see attractions include:
Ashe County Cheese - see cheese being made and enjoy delicious ice cream! (18 minutes away!)

There are enough of these items for one night, or maybe two.

Our family had an absolute blast at the River Refuge on the South Fork. The kids were overjoyed with the array of toys, games, and books, and the hot tub was a definite highlight! My kids loved waking up in the mornings and looking for the horses next door. The area and the house itself were simply breathtaking, leaving us eagerly anticipating our next visit.

What a wonderful place to stay! As lovers of both Boone and West Jefferson, this was the perfect spot right in between. The kids enjoyed seeing the horses next door, we all loved a good hot tub soak, and it was wonderful to explore Rendezvous Mt State Park. We hope to make a return trip to this airbnb that has everything you could possibly need for a cozy stay. ?

We had such a wonderful time at the River Refuge! Everything was comfortable and well thought out, so many large and small details that made us feel welcome and at ease. It was the perfect place for a girls getaway, and would be a great place for families too. We loved waking up and watching the horses and barn cats from the hot tub, cooking in the incredibly well appointed kitchen, and cozying up by the fire in the evenings. It was easy to get to Boone and to local hiking trails. We will definitely be back!

The River Refuge is a wonderful spot for a vacation. The location is beautiful. The neighbors have horses. The hot tub overlooks the mountains. There is a hammock and a swing. We enjoyed s'mores by the fire with firewood already stacked and ready for us. The river is a short walk downhill. My kids enjoyed wading in the river. The house is 30 min from Tweetsie Railroad, a fun spot for kids. It is a short 15 min drive to Mount Jefferson with gorgeous views and hikes. We did the Rhodendron Trail, the perfect length trail for my kids. The River Refuge house is well stocked with board games and legos. It was lovely to wake up and enjoy coffee on the porch while my kids happily played with the games. Highly recommend this lovely home!

River refuge was the perfect escape for our short weekend getaway. Accommodations exceeded our expectations with little touches to the decor and home furnishings that show thoughtfulness for guests and unmatched hospitality. We look forward to staying there again and exploring West Jefferson some more, especially the donut shop!

This was a great home to spend a long Labor Day weekend. It was very comfortable and had everything that was needed for our stay. The location was great. Refuge on the South Fork of the New River is a perfect name. The management company was very responsive when needed. We will be returning!

We can't wait to come back!
We had the best time staying here! We visited for 4 nights but wish we could have stayed longer. We have two young kids and two young-at-heart dogs, and the accommodations could not have been better for our crew. Our 4-year-old was over the moon to play with all the legos that were available, and we got to try a ton of new board games. Having fun things to do at the house (that we didn't have to pack!) was so perfect because it kept one kid happy while the other kid napped, or while the grown ups made meals or even enjoyed a hot coffee or cold drink on the beautiful deck! We loved visiting the river, trying our hand at fishing, hiking to a waterfall, visiting local breweries and restaurants, and riding the Alpine coaster. Next time we hope to go gem mining, tubing, and pick out a few more hikes. We can't wait to come back!!

I do not where to start! This home is absolutely beautiful and so perfect for a mountain getaway. It is 30 minutes away from Boone to enjoy a bit of shopping but also set off the beaten path to make you disconnect from the hectic world. From the short walk down the hill to the river to play in the crisp water to enjoying watching deer play in the yard every morning, this home is everything I could have imagined for a getaway after a busy school year. It is an easy drive from Mebane, NC and the home has everything you could possibly need to enjoy a yummy meal with your favorite people creating the best memories ever! My family will be back again and will be sharing with friends so everyone can partake in this beauty of a home!

Beautiful Family - Friendly Mountain Home
Loved this place! We were traveling with 3 young children, and the home had so many great features for kids & families like a spacious interior with two family/living rooms, lots of games and books, and bowls/plates for kids. The kitchen had everything we could want for cooking & eating, and there so many thoughtful touches - like chip clips! Overall, a great getaway for kids & adults.

We came for a long weekend and loved this place! The location was great, close to both Boone and West Jefferson, and so close to the river! The house itself was as nice as advertised - things were new and useful! All the beds were comfy, kitchen was really well supplied, shower water was hot and good pressure…really a nice place to stay! And we thought the real treasure was the Great Room -and it provided a beautiful backdrop for our photos ! We had a few folks in our group, and having the Great Room and the TV room at the opposite ends of the house meant everyone could do what they wanted, without having to compromise. Definitely give this place a try!

This property is a gem of a rental! I knew from the photos that it was lovely, but driving up to the house took my breath away. Nothing but green and mountain views and green grass for my kids to run around on. The natural beauty is just stunning. There are a couple of gentle horses next door that my kids could say hello to, and a fire pit to relax around day and night. The setup is great for a family with kids. We had 4 kids in the kid bedroom, and 3 adults between the other bedrooms. The living spaces are super spacious. There is a huge stock of board games to play too! We loved that all the light switches and cabinets were labelled and everything we needed to cook for 7 (or much more) was ready to go. The owners are clearly very thoughtful and intentional about making the space cozy, accessible, and easy. Other bonuses include a very short walk to the New River, and quick and easy drives to grocery stores, brewpubs, and lots more river and hiking spots. The location was awesome for a drive from Durham too.
